BAROQUE TREASURES - MUSICA SACRA
Antonio Vivaldi: Stabat Mater, Gloria

FROM THE MONASTERY KLOSTERNEUBURG (VIENNA)

In 1703 Antonio Vivaldi entered the service of the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice. The son of a musician, he was 25 years young and had just been ordained a priest. All the compositions that will be heard at this year's Easter concert were written by Vivaldi for the Ospedale. This orphanage has long been an institution in Venice, both in the city's charitable network and in its musical life. Girls grew up here, who as infants had been placed in the "culla segreta", the baby hatch. Many an illegitimate scion of the Venetian high nobility may also have been present. The female pupils, if they were talented, received a musical education of high quality, because the institution was financed among other things by the concerts that took place there. This also explains why highly qualified young musicians were employed here: One of Vivaldi's predecessors was Johann Rosenmüller, one of his successors was Nicola Porpora. The orphanage's concerts were internationally celebrated, and music connoisseurs and lovers travelled to Venice for them. The choir and orchestra of the Ospedale were more famous in the 18th century than the Kelly Family in the 1990s. Some of the young ladies stayed there for the rest of their lives: first as schoolgirls, then as respected teachers and musicians. It is easy to guess what fate would have awaited them without the "culla segreta": either they would have been killed immediately after birth, or they would have died in the streets, in homelessness, in prostitution or in the dungeons of the notorious Venetian prison or madhouse.
